My Thoughts on #ManBookers2017 Shortlist

Some critics have hailed this year short list as one of the best ever or atleast better than last years top 6. I will not fully agree to that but this is surely a brave set of books. Heavyweights like Anundathi Roy’s Ministry of Utmost Happiness and Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railway were two big names absentees from the shortlist. A welcome absence was Zaide Smith’s Swing time which was too painful to read for me. I avoided writing a review for it which after an interesting start,  was a let down by very slow pace and monotonous narration. USA and UK dominated this years short-list with 3 each authors in the shortist.

Here are this year’s top 6:

  1. Exit West By Mohsin Hamid

It was my first book from this year’s long list and though I enjoyed the first half of the book but disappointing end of the book. I rated in 3.5 out of 5 on goodreads.

2. Autumn by Ali Smith

My favorite book so far, Ali Smith artistic take on the Brexit, Old age, art, poetry, immigration and relationship- I rated it 4 out of 5 star on goodreads.

3. Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders

Just finished reading it yesterday, bit of a mixed bag for me- funny in parts , however big favorite for many to take the grand price. I rated it 3 out of 5 stars on goodreads.

4. 4 3 2 1 by Paul Auster

Like Lincoln in the Bardo, it is also an American Historical fiction followin the four generations of Fergusons.

5. History of Wolves by Emily Fridlund

History of Wolves follows the story of 14 year of Linda who befriends the family who moves near their woods and the change and emotions that she goes through during that time.

6. Elmet by Fiona Mozley

With Elmet, Fiona becomes among 3 women writers that made top 6 and third British writers to make the cut. Elmet is based on contemporary English society and one family’s precarious place in it.
